Oysters Love the Lowcountry

In terms of the Oyster, I was fairly naive when we moved to Hilton Head ten years ago. I had never had an Oyster and had never really heard of an Oyster Roast. I thought Oyster Roasts were something Hilton Head had invented. I know, that’s silly.  As I’ve become more of a “lowcountry local” (my true LOCAL friends are laughing), I realized that…Oysters and the Lowcountry are one in the same. The Lowcountry LOVES Oysters and Oysters LOVE the Lowcountry. And, no. Hilton Head did not invent Oyster Roasts. Hudson’s did! Right?

Confession time: I don’t like Oysters. Gasp!!! I know, its kinda of a sin down here. I don’t like Sweet Tea either but that’s a story for another time. But…I do LOVE a good time, I LOVE live music, I LOVE fun peeps so… I love Oyster Roasts! I’m sure one day I will warm up to the idea of actually eating Oysters but for now I just consider them the “GUEST OF HONOR”. This Fall we went to the most perfect Oyster Roast in Bluffton, SC and it was a fundraiser for one of my favorite non-profits, Volunteers in Medicine.

Brian and I were super excited to be invited to Bourbon & Bubbly, a benefit for Volunteers in Medicine which is a super awesome amazing cause right here in the Lowcountry.

Volunteers in Medicine:

With the dedicated service of volunteer physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, the Bluffton Jasper VIM provides care to our friends and neighbors in Bluffton and Jasper County who are without medical insurance.

My friend Hannah Fulton Toney, local designer for J Banks, wielded her magic and the evening was brilliant. Equal parts fancy cocktail party & true Lowcountry Oyster Roast. Cue the Bourbon and Champagne and…yes, you bet we spent waaay too much coin at the Silent Auction.

Let’s start with the food…

Some of the most creative restaurants stepped up to provide the fantastic FIVE COURSE MEAL. Yes, Mr. Brian was in ‘hog heaven’. Everything was amazing!

If you  know me, you know that my favorite course is dessert and what a bonus to have my dear friend, Jennifer Gleitsman with Marmalade Homemade Baking Co. working her tail off to serve a dessert trio that literally had everyone begging for more.

The Music

Gino FanelliGino’s look and talent was the perfect background to the cocktail hour. John Wasem played during dinner and is also a good friend of ours. I asked him if I could dance on stage…he politely declined. John plays at his family run restaurants ELA’s (in Shelter Cove Harbor) and the PEARL (Bluffton).

The night ended with a night cap at the Dispensary and I ride from our pal with Bluffton Bike Taxi. Such a fun night! A great event for an awesome cause. You MUST go next year.

Give an Oyster this Holiday!

I’m loving our collection of Oyster gifts in the shop. Our Oyster Ornaments are flying out the door. They are beautiful and have a cool story behind them. I met Rachel Gordon, Designer Grit & Grace studio, by chance. Her boyfriend was playing a gig at the Jazz Corner and she meandered into the shop that night. She is super talented and I just love the detail and “give-back” behind her Oyster beauties.

Grit & Grace is a coastal chic sustainable gift company based in Charleston, SC that makes oyster shell dishes and holiday ornaments. Our oyster shells are perfectly created by nature, then hand painted with an ocean of love to remind you “the world is your oyster.” — The perfect gift to hold jewelry, soap, salt and pepper or to decorate your nautical themed Christmas tree.

3 a.m Eternal

CGP2017_FallLouette-16

It’s 5:58 am and I’ve been up with my youngest, Rose.

All. Night. Long.

We’ve been walking the hallways, rocking, singing and everything else you do to lull a babe to sleep.

Oh, I forgot about the cursing. Not directly at my child, but at pretty much anything else. Walking, rocking, singing and cursing. Please go the F*&K to sleep!

(**Do not click on the above link if you are squirmy about the F-bomb. But DO click on the link if you have no shame).

Unfortunately, Rose has not slept through the night in basically two years. I really can’t think about it too much or I get a little depressed. Not complaining. Just stating the facts.

I always find myself singing songs to my children that just pop into my head. Madonna’s “Holiday” is a favorite, Lisa Loeb “Stay”–I know every single word.

But…this little gem came out of NOWHERE  this morning and I definitely started to laugh at myself.  Obscure? Absolutely.  Awesome? You bet your sweet 90’s tush it is.

Does anyone else remember this song??? Listen to the lyrics. Yes, KLF…3 am does feel E-T-E-R-N-A-L.  Perfect little club jam for sleepless Mothers. No one wants to be up at 3 am. It totally feels eternal. Right? Cheers to all my 90’s Mamas out there that now experience a whole new meaning to “3 am Eternal” that has nothing to do with clubbing.

PS- If you live on Hilton Head Island and need a caffeine jolt…visit my pals at Java Burrito Co. They just launched their Holiday Coffee drinks!

The POWER of Empowering

I’ve got a pretty cool job. As a buyer for Louette I have the opportunity to seek out really unique companies that are doing awesome and creative work. Social companies are changing up the fashion and gift industry (TOMS was the frontrunner).  It’s amazing how a little planning and creativity can foster fashion forward/quality goods while helping to combat poverty and empower women. Here are two of my favorite socially driven companies.

**FashionABLE assists the global community as well as locally in Tennessee and Revive Bath and Body is a southern company as well, helping others in Atlanta, Ga. Read below to learn more:

We are proud to carry leather goods from FashionABLE–a company that supports women both locally and globally by providing jobs. Not just another social company, FashionABLE has done the research to find that “throwing charitable funds” at poor communities does not combat poverty. Instead, FashionABLE works closely with manufacturers in communities to help them implement business practices and work environments to be successful. “We believe that serious long term solutions to poverty lie in creating jobs, not giving money away” (www.livefashionable.com).

Fall 2016 Collection

Stop into the shop to check out our collection from FashionABLE! We’ve got wallets, cross body bags and totes. You are going to LOVE all the rich hues and beautiful craftsmanship.

Next up…

Revive Bath and Body

Screen Shot 2016-08-19 at 10.47.16 AM

I literally stumbled across this company walking through Virginia-Highlands in Atlanta, Ga. Originally I was intrigued by Revive’s loofah soaps and then when I learned they are a locally owned, socially conscious company– I had to get it in the shop! Owner, Catilin started her company at her house. Making soaps for fun, it quickly morphed into a full-blown business.

“RENEW. RESTORE. REVIVE” is the slogan for Revive Bath and Body. In 2014, Revive partnered with Haven Atlanta to help women exit the trafficking trade. More about this amazing partnership HERE

One of the best-selling gifts at Louette are Revive’s Loofah Soaps. Made with all natural ingredients, these soaps beautifully exfoliate the skin. Available in eight delicious scents. Portion of the proceeds are donated to HavenATL.

Designs and concept by The Twelve Oaks Group, Design & Build

Construction has begun…

Here are some answers to your burning questions:

  1. “I love Louette!!! Is the NEW shop going to be same?” Answer: YES!!! But…better. Just like my Grandmother–her namesake shop is just getting more amazing & beautiful with age. No detail will be overlooked. We have painstakingly removed every. single. piece. of reclaimed lumber that was in our original shop (I’m using the word “we” to mean my husband and his crew.) We will be transferring everything from our original location to our new location at The Village at Wexford. Plus, we’ve been traveling throughout the South East picking up even more reclaimed material to use in the NEW shop.  CLICK HERE to see why my husband rocks!

  2. “Why are you moving?” Answer: Because I’m crazy. Well…yes, I’m crazy but that’s not the only reason we are moving. Over the past three years we have developed a strong  following from Hilton Head Island locals (which still blows my mind and makes me feel eternally grateful). We’ve begun to need a place with more available parking for our valued customers. We learned a space was available at The Village at Wexford.   I’m a huge sucker for cool concepts and amazing design–Louette’s new neighbors are unique locally owned businesses like Java Burrito, Gifted, Island Child, Needlepoint Junction and Porter & Pig (just to name a few) that are bringing truly original concepts to the island. Its the perfect fit and we couldn’t be more excited to be at the heart of shopping local. DSC_4658-THE2654PROJECT-Louette-Web
  3. “Will you have all the same great clothing and gifts?” Answer: Absolutely! The concept behind Louette will remain the same. We appreciate the simple loveliness in life. Everything in the shop is hand-picked. Louette is a carefully curated selection of classic clothing, home accents & gifts. As in the past, we strive to support local and regional artists and designers. We will continue to offer a variety of locally made products.

  4. “Are you hiring?”Answer: Yes, we are! If you are a lover of design, fashion, art, laughing, coffee, chocolate, simple luxuries, candles and pretty things then this is the job for you. We are now excepting resumes for part-time positions. MUST be able to work weekends and approximately 12-15 hours per week. Please email your resume to: info@louetteboutique.com

Happy New Year

UnknownIt’s hard to believe 2014 is over! For us, at Louette Boutique, 2014 was a banner year.

We are humbled and thankful for all of our amazing supporters and cannot wait to see what 2015 has in store.

Louette Boutique is CLOSED today (Jan. 1st) but will re-open Jan. 2nd.

Louette is a labor of love, here is a look back on my favorite moments from 2014. xo, Heather

1. TENT SALE

Our Tent Sale to mark our 1 year anniversary was wildly successful. In fact, we added a second one in the Fall because our “Louette Ladies” loved the first one so much. It is more than just a SALE, it is a great event to transition seasons and we bring in local designers to showcase their goods. Keep an eye out for our 2015 Tent Sales (end of February and September). This was one of my favorite events of 2014!

2. Celebrity Clients

There is nothing more flattering than hearing from one of the world’s most popular and well-respeceted designers. Our NEW Louette Lady definitely added some sparkle to 2014!

3.  Working with AMAZING creators, designers and FRIENDS!

One of the most thrilling experiences of 2014 has been focusing on supporting local and small designers and companies. I love being a part of the creative process and I am super lucky to have some AMAZINGLY talented friends. It’s a really cool experience to be able to showcase their work. We have loved working with Breathless Paper Co., Elabloom, Little Fishboateak and more!
