Summer Round-up

IMG_2938
Summer in the Lowcountry…there’s nothing better! Here’s a snapshot of one of my favorite spots on Hilton Head Island: Heritage Farm. Located in Sea Pines Plantation across from Lawton Stables, these privately owned farm plots are open to the public. Although picking is frowned upon taking in the beautiful landscape and amazing gardens are encouraged. This is one of Hilton Head Island’s hidden gems–just another reason HHI was named one of the TOP vacation spots in the country!

Never fear….There’s still time to snag some fabulous Summer styles!

SEMI ANNUAL TENT SALE!!!!!

images

It’s the weekend you’ve been waiting for….our popular semi-annual TENT SALE will be held Friday, August 7th- Saturday, August, 8th

Don’t miss out on fabulous finds at 15%-75% OFF!

50% OFF Shoes, great deals on Spring & Summer items

Tea towels & Tassels

The entire state of Ohio has migrated down to HHI, beach parking lots are packed, Gregg Russell concerts are in full swing…Summer is officially here! With each new season comes exciting new goodies for the shop too. This Summer I am excited to introduce two awesome, independent, made in the U.S.A companies.

First up….Belle & Union.

Self proclaimed, “new americana”, Belle & Union started in Hilton Head Island’s backyard….Savannah, Ga!

Meg, a SCAD graduate and her husband Josh have meshed clever nuances with adorable designs. “Inspired by each other, our family, and the beautiful sights, sounds and differences found from coast to coast throughout the U.S., we decided to celebrate our roots and community the best way we know how: by basking in each others’ company, filling simple moments with memorable laughs, and sharing these moments with friends and friends to come (Meg & Josh, belleandunion.com).

Unknown

We are loving our collection of Belle & Union Tea Towels, market notes and boxed cards. You will be drawn to the nostalgia of each design and in awe of their ability to mix vintage ideas with new twists.  Louette clients have been pairing tea towels with our cake plates for wedding gifts and giving our vintage camper boxed cards as hostess gifts.

Check out our next Southern designer…Virtue Jewelry.

This mom of two is Southern to the core. What we love about Virtue is the structure of each piece–handcrafted using the most unique stones and beads. The construction is flawless! Virtue has been flying out the door since we received our first shipment. Don’t be afraid to ask…we can order custom pieces for you.

Happy Summer!

Lowcountry in the City

Truth time. I am a mutt. No, seriously I am. Here’s the deal…

IMG_2785

I have been born and raised in the South (born in Texas, raised in the Atl., graduated from The University of Georgia and live in Hilton Head, SC). However, both my parents are from Long Island, NY and the majority of my family live in Manhattan, Long Island and New England.

Here a some confessions of a Southernor who was raised by Yankees:

I did not have sweet tea until I was 18 years old and it makes me gag–what I am trying to say is that.. I hate sweet tea (gasp!), my mom made grits once and all us kids thought she had burned oatmeal, I say “y’all” but do not have a s-l-o-w southern drawl and I use the F**word often–something only New Yorkers think is completely normal (it’s my Yankee parents fault).

Despite my Yankee tendencies,  I love the South—the hospitality, warm weather, Waffle House (CLICK HERE to found out why Waffle House is the one true source of happiness), the Braves, the culture, and of course, The Lowcountry! The South is my home. But, I do feel the need to escape now and again; I get itchy and need to wear all black and not smile or say thank you to every single person I see…it feels AWESOME!

IMG_2764

This trip I was lucky enough to venture out of  Manhattan for a few days and headed East to the cutest little town on the planet…Northport, Long Island. This little seaside town is the quaint and majestic–loads of sailboats and “mom & pop” shops.

After eating my way through town, I stumbled across Heartichoke. The name alone is precious. This Northport staple is set back off the main strip, once you walk inside you are greeted with beautiful chandeliers, vintage jewelry mixed with new handbags and an array of unique goods. I fell in love with the attention detail and the mixture of new, found and old goodies. Such a gem!

I am lucky to have tons of family in NY and visit often. My love affair with Manhattan is ongoing. Every time I visit the Big Apple,  I always seem to come back down South rejuvenated. The creativity alone is inspiring, only in NYC can a trash can become art.

It also makes me appreciate life below the Mason Dixon line. I love Hilton Head Island and all the mystery of the Lowcountry. Louette is a direct reflection of myself; southern through and through with a knack for finding the cool and unusual. There will always be room for the Yank and the Southern Belle at Louette!

Where have you traveled lately that inspired you?

Forget the candy and apples.

We love Teachers! Forget the candy and apples this year. Let us help you create the ultimate Teacher Gift Bag!

Step 1: Snag one of our canvas totes (Available for Islanders and Blufftonians)

DSC_7887-LouetteProducts-WEBDSC_7723-LouetteProducts-Print                Step 2: Fill with clever goodies.

  • Teachers are constantly jotting down to-do lists and notes. Our mini composition notebooks from Rifle Paper Co. are perfect.
  • Your kids are little germ magnets (sorry, they are!). The constant washing of hands destroys skin. Not to mention, most Teachers don’t have a ton of time to pamper themselves. A great pick? Our hand lotions and soaps from Barr-Co. This line is super gentle and the scent is subtle–the perfect simple luxury.
  • Teachers are angels in disguise. Place one of our pocket angels in a “Thank you” card. A tiny token of your appreciation that will be cherished.

Baby boom!

According to sales at Louette, Hilton Head Island is in the midst of a serious BABY BOOM! As a mother myself, my goal for “Baby by Louette” is to curate gift items for mom and baby that are equal in cuteness and functionality.

When my best friend, mom/momprenuer Jess (Owner & Designer, Breathless Paper Co.) spotted this diaper bag at Atlanta market we both gasped. Why? For starters the price point is FANTASTIC;  it’s hard to justify dropping hundreds of dollars on a vehicle for diapers (sometimes clean, sometimes dirty…ha!), crushed up cheerios, lost goldfish and wipes. This gem is under $100 bucks ($79).

Secondly, it’s uber cute & super functional. Seriously, this is the cutest bag we’ve ever seen.  The bright yellow lining pairs great with the classic denim and white stripes.  Let the bag envy begin! “Damn girl, that’s a nice diaper bag”

DSC_6060-LouetteProducts-WEBNext up…Our COOL new swaddle blankets! Yes, cool. Mom’s can be cool too!

“At approximately 48″ x 45″, their substantial, eye catching size is perfect for among many other things: swaddling, hanging as a tapestry, covering strollers, breastfeeding covers, and most importantly cuddling.”

IMG_2620

Each swaddle blanket has a unique sketch or saying. The soft texture, large size and unique design creates a truly special gift for any new mom or mom-to-be.

DSC_7999-LouetteProducts-PrintHave you been down to Sea Pines Beach Club this week? According to the lack of parking…beach days have arrived! What beach accessory are we not leaving home without? Our Fedora. This year Louette has various styles and colors in stock.

Classically chic, the Fedora is packable and our hats are adjustable! No more excuses–your head IS NOT TOO SMALL TO WEAR A HAT (an extremely common complaint heard from the dressing room. ha!).

Need a spot to sport your new beach accessory? Here’s a list of our favorite HHI beaches:

1. Sea Pines Resort Beach Club

2. Driessen Beach

3. The beach at The Westin Resort

Sophomore

It’s hard to believe that Louette is 2 years old this week! When my husband said to me the other morning “You have just finished your sophomore year!”. I laughed because that description couldn’t be more accurate. Freshman year of high school  is new, exciting and…extremely terrifying (at least for me it was. Not sure I have ever gotten over “the tripping in Senior Parking lot incident” back in 1996). That first year launching Louette felt very similar. Okay there weren’t any heckling Seniors but I did trip in The Village Exchange parking lot taking out the trash amongst many other novice mistakes.

Year Two: Sophomore year is less scary because you know what to expect. However the expectations are higher. You made your mistakes and now you have to apply what you learned. Easier said than done!

Here are a few things I have learned:

1. Be patient–Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither will your business or house or pool or whatever you are trying to build.

2. Use your allies–I have some amazingly talented and creative friends that have been eager to help whenever I have asked. The asking is the hardest part sometimes. Ask for help, it helps.

3. Believe–I am always my worst critic. But when I stick to an idea it usually pans out. Even if it’s a crazy, hair-brained idea that has my employees questioning my sanity.

4. Bookeeping sucks. Accounting stinks but part of the gig. Sigh.

5. Be kind. I have met and work with some of the most amazing people on the planet and kindness goes a long way in even business–contrary to popular belief.

As any business owner will tell you, owning a business is like adding another baby to the family. It’s a labor of love for sure. I tip my hat to ALL the other local entrepreneurs out there. It’s not for the faint of heart.

March 2013
March 2013 Construction process almost finished. Reclaimed wood on the walls, 1920’s wooden doors constructed into clothing racks and our kiosk. All done by my husband–my love and biggest Louette supporter!
